Distance Learning Services: Online and Off-campus classes

If you're taking a SUNY New Paltz class online or at one of our off-campus sites, you're a distance learner! The library has some unique services designed to make research for your distance class successful and meaningful. Use this page to learn more.

The Find It At New Paltz system helps you locate an article.  Find out whether the article is online, in our paper collection, or should be ordered through our ILLIAD system.

  • You'll see a Find it at New Paltz link in our databases whenever you see your search results
  • We've got some great videos to show you how it works
  • Just want to find out if we own a specific journal or article online?  Use our Journals tool or Citation Linker
  • TIP: New Paltz Distance Learners may use ILLIAD to order materials we have in our print collections, as well as items we have to order from other libraries

Can't find it online? Have materials delivered to you!

If you're an online learner, or if you study at one of our many extension sites, you can order articles and other materials through our Interlibrary Loan system, called ILLIAD.

This includes materials from our in-library collection, as well as materials we don't own and borrow from other libraries on your behalf. It's easy: just fill out an online ILLiad request form.

  1. Delivery of in-library materials is available to SUNY New Paltz distance learners only.
  2. Commuters and other on-campus library users may use ILLiad to order materials from other libraries, but they may not request that we send them materials ownedby STL.

Remember: * This Service is Free *

What kinds of materials does the library deliver to its Distance Learners?

  • Journal Articles
  • Book Chapters
  • ERIC documents
  • Other media that can be digitized (within copyright limits)

Are there materials that the library doesn't send to its Distance Learners?

  • At this time, the library does not or UPS mail books or other physical media (CDs, DVDs, VHS tapes)

Distance Learners who need books or other media may check the catalogs of local libraries to discover whether those materials are at those locations, or whether Interlibrary Loan is available at those libraries.  Distance Learners are also invited to travel to New Paltz to use its library collection

Where are my materials sent?  How do I pick them up?

Many articles and chapters can be delivered electronically to a secure webspace in ILLIAD, or to your email. You select how you will be notified when the item is available, and how you'll access it, when you register for ILLIAD the first time you log in.

To see your received items, or to check the status of a request, just log into ILLIAD and use the menu.

Do I have to fill out a request form in any special way?

In order to speed your requests :

1. When you first fill out an ILLiad Registration Form, select "Distance Ed." from the pull-down "Status" menu.

2. When you fill out a book or journal request form, type "I am a distance learner" in the Notes field, and tell us what online or extension class you are attending.
