This guide is designed to gather all the tools and resources available to New Paltz faculty when searching for cited references or citation counts for their publications. Useful when preparing for promotion and tenure.

Cited Reference Search in JSTOR

JSTOR is a multi-disciplinary database but is known for its strength in the humanities.  Beware that most of JSTOR's content is not current, publishers do not release their content to JSTOR between 3-5 years after publication.

You should also know that JSTOR offers a number of different collections, some of which the library does not subscribe to.  When performing a cited reference search, make sure that the boxes for Include only the content I can access and Include Links to External Content are checked.  This will give you most complete results.

To search for cited references for a particular article, first hover over Search on the top bar and click on Citation Locator.

Enter your name and add any limits, such as an article, title, a date, or a journal you've published in.  Click Search. Click on the title of the article you want to search for citations to. If you're logged into a personal account, you can mark multiple articles and click Track Citation to set up e-mail alerts when a new work is published that cites one of the articles you selected. Look in the right column in the JSTOR box for a link that tell you the number of items that cite this article.  If this link is not present, there are no articles in JSTOR that cite it.  You can also follow the Items Citing this Item link in the Google Scholar box to search for citing articles on Google Scholar

In the results list, click on the Article Title.  If other articles in JSTOR cite this article, the JSTOR box in the right column will include the number of Items Citing this Item. Click on this link to view the list of citing documents. The Google Scholar box includes links to citing articles too but not all of these links will work.

TIP:  If you want to set up alerts for new articles that cite your work, make sure you create a free personal JSTOR account and log into it before beginning your search.  When you find an article that you want to track, click on the Article Title.  Then click on Track Citation to set up e-mail alerts when a new work is published that cites one of the articles you selected.
