Where to Publish: Library Tips & Strategies for Junior Faculty

Basic Suggestions

Here are some suggestions to look for potential journals and some questions to ask yourself.

Look at the journals you read or that your colleagues read. Look at the journals included in your subjects databases. Each database will typically have a list of journals included in the database. Look at your professional organizations publications list. Look at the places your colleagues publish. You can usually find publication information on faculty profiles or CVs.

  • Do these journals cover your research area?
  • What journals are cited in specific articles that you read?

When considering a journal as a potential place to publish, consider if the journal is the right place for you to publish your work.

  • Does the subject matter covered in the journal match your scholarship?
  • Do the types of articles published and article length guidelines match with what you want to submit?
  • Who is the audience of the journal?
