Fostering Happiness and Wellness "Together"

It's hard to maintain physical distances from the people you love. We get it. We not-so-secretly wish we could frolic with our families and friends, totally unencumbered by fear of germs, contagion, and  general safety. But while we continue to navigate through this strange new world, there are so many marvelous things to be grateful for and appreciate. Winning an online game, meeting your weekly fitness goal(s), and finishing an intellectually and emotionally arduous semester are just a few things on which we can choose to focus our attention and stay optimistic.

This month, we hope to convince you to try various different ways to safely connect with others, including video chats and watch parties. We are all doing the best we can, and our goal is to end this year with happiness, wellness, and a newfound connection to others that will meaningfully shape the future.

Spongebob and Squidward read about safely connecting with others.

Best Video Chat Apps

After careful consideration and reading this article from Techie Tech Tech, we found the following video chat apps easy to use, fun, and safe:

  1. Whatsapp
    • PROS: Works with iOS and Android, is free, and uses end-to-end encryption
    • CONS: Can't use on a computer (must install Android Simulator in order to work from PC)
  2. Google Duo
    • PROS: Works with iOS and Android, is free, and "Knock Knock" feature allows you to see caller's video before answering
    • CONS: Can't share multimedia messages (only supports video chat)
  3. HouseParty - please note that this was not mentioned in Techie Tech Tech's article.
    • PROS: Works with iOS and Android, allows you to play games with friends while video chatting, and "Lock" feature keeps conversation private so other friends on app can’t join in the call
    • CONS: PC version doesn't allow for games (becomes basic video chat)
