What will the impact be on students using the Library?
The Main Floor will be closed, beginning sometime in the Fall Semester until the completion of the main phase of the renovation. A new entrance will be created on the Concourse level. The Checkout Desk and Information Desk will be relocated there as well. There will be periods when the library may be unusually noisy and dusty. We will give people as much advance notice as possible when we expect any type of noise or disruption.
What will the Main Floor look like when it's done?
The Main Floor will be much more open and airy: there will be many more windows with a view of the Gunks. There will also be several new study rooms (many equipped with projectors, smart boards and other technology), and a one-stop station for IT, research, reserves, check out and other services.
Why is the Library being renovated?
Many of these planned renovations have come about from discussions with students and faculty about the role of the library in supporting academic achievement and intellectual development. Sojourner Truth Library, and the College community as a whole, recognized the need for better use of our library's public spaces. Students need both quiet and social environments. For example, we know students like to study alone or in groups, and often they need flexible, modular spaces for collaborative and individual study. We also recognize the need for more natural light, a more efficient footprint for our print collections, and more dynamic work areas.
Will the Library remain open during renovations?
YES!! STL will continue providing the same services and collections, during the same hours. In addition, you will continue to have access to ebooks, article databases, research assistance and more via the website library.newpaltz.edu
Where will the Checkout and Information Desks be located during the renovation?
The Checkout and Reference Desks will be located on the concourse level during the renovation.
Where will I find quiet study space at STL while the renovation is taking place?
We will continue to maintain the ground floor quiet study area. We're also designating SUB 100 South (Commuter Lounge) as a backup quiet study area on weekends during the Fall and Spring semesters. During exam periods SUB 100 North will be designated a quiet study area on weekdays for the whole time the building is open. We will continue to post quiet study area availability on the library calendar/hours page.
Will there be more electrical outlets in the renovated Library spaces?
YES!! The renovated library will have additional places to charge up, as well as improved wired and wireless access. We will also continue to have lending laptops, scanning stations and high-quality printing.
How will I know where to find things during the renovation?
We will make every effort to assist you through updated signage and information on our website. Important updates will also be posted on this guide and on the STL Facebook page. And as always, please ask for help at our Information Desk and Checkout Desk. Our friendly and knowledgeable staff are there to help you!
Will the other floors of the library be renovated in the future?
Yes. Every floor of the Library will be undergoing some sort of improvement over the next few years. Keep checking the website for future plans.
Will the renovated library be a sustainably designed "green" building?
The renovation project incorporates numerous sustainable design features including energy efficient lighting and new windows, increased natural daylight, new perimeter insulation, low-VOC paint, recycled fixtures and furnishings, and upgraded heating and cooling systems. For more information, visit the Office of Sustainability Website
Will food and drink be allowed in the renovated library?
Our policy remains the same: drinks with closed lids will be allowed but no food of any kind is allowed in the Library. The renovated lobby will have a larger cafe seating area, and there will be places to sit and eat in the new Main Floor gallery space.
