Types of Information Sources

How do we distinguish between popular and scholarly information sources?
In evaluating  sources, consider the
 authority or expertise of the authors and the level of scholarship.

  • Was the article or book written by a journalist, reporter, or staff writer?  Or was the source written by a professor, scholar, or expert within the field of interest?
  •  Who is the intended audience for the source? The general public? Someone without prior knowledge or understanding of the topic, or  someone who is well-studied and informed?
