Proprietary software developed by SAS Institute. SAS (previously "Statistical Analysis System") is a software suite for advanced analytics, multivariate analyses, business intelligence, data management, and predictive analytics.

Proprietary software provided by IBM. IBM SPSS Statistics is a software package used for interactive, or batched, statistical analysis. Accepts a number of different file formats.

R is a language and environment for statistical computing and graphics. It provides a wide variety of statistical (linear and nonlinear modelling, classical statistical tests, time-series analysis, classification, clustering, …) and graphical techniques, and is highly extensible. While there is a learning curve to understand the R language (if you want to learn, check out courses on Lynda.com, now available from SUNY New Paltz), it is a powerful tool for importing and manipulating data, as well as creating statistics.

RStudio is a graphical environment for coding using R. This will be the primary means of using the language.

Tableau Public is a software and community for visualization of data. The power of visualization is how it can convey many data in an immediately interesting and striking format. Tableau allows the data analyst to control the various aspects of data visualization such a graph type, color, size, text and other aspects of style.
